{Review} Spindle Fire (Spindle Fire #1) by Lexa Hillyer

A kingdom burns. A princess sleeps. This is no fairy tale.

It all started with the burning of the spindles.

It all started with a curse…

Half sisters Isabelle and Aurora are polar opposites: Isabelle is the king’s headstrong illegitimate daughter, whose sight was tithed by faeries; Aurora, beautiful and sheltered, was tithed her sense of touch and her voice on the same day. Despite their differences, the sisters have always been extremely close.

And then everything changes, with a single drop of Aurora’s blood—and a sleep so deep it cannot be broken.

As the faerie queen and her army of Vultures prepare to march, Isabelle must race to find a prince who can awaken her sister with the kiss of true love and seal their two kingdoms in an alliance against the queen.

Isabelle crosses land and sea; unearthly, thorny vines rise up the palace walls; and whispers of revolt travel in the ashes on the wind. The kingdom falls to ruin under layers of snow. Meanwhile, Aurora wakes up in a strange and enchanted world, where a mysterious hunter may be the secret to her escape…or the reason for her to stay.

The Review: Spindle Fire has only been on my radar for a few months after I kept seeing it pop up every now and then over Instagram. I decided to look it up and even though there are quite a few mixed reviews, I was intrigued enough to want to try it. I’m always looking for new retelling stories and with this being a retelling of both Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland I was immediately excited to see how the author could combine both stories into one but I was honestly just disappointed when I started.

The story is told by two different narratives, Isabelle & Aurora. Isabelle and Aurora are very different. For starters, Aurora is the illegitimate daughter of the king while the other, Isbe is not as she was born out of wed lock and has a different mother to Aurora. Aurora is lost her sense of touch and her voice to faeries as payment, while Isbe loses her sight. I actually really liked this aspect of the story and thought it was unique and interesting. I’ve read a lot of faery books in the past and haven’t come across this as yet so it was definitely something new and fresh. But just this one likable thing couldn’t hold my interest for long.
As the story progresses both of the girls start their own journeys which leads them onto different paths but ultimately trying to reach the same ending. This is where the problem for me lies. Once their journeys start I actually started to lose interest in the story. Each sister is basically telling each retelling, and for me it just didn’t work. I found the stories became confusing and as we get further into the faery world, it didn’t make sense. The girl’s stories were going in completely different situations that once again didn’t make sense – more so Aurora’s story.
I have to admit I’m not a patient reader. If a book doesn’t grab me within the first 100 pages or so then I start to lose interest. And I lost interest very quickly with this book and this why I decided to not finish the book at around 47%. If anything I actually gave this book more time than I normally would.
Thank you to HarperTeen for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

{Review} Truth or Dare by Non Pratt

Posted by Donna
Release Date: June 1st, 2017
Finished Date: June 1st, 2017
Publishers: Walker
Genre: YA, Contemporary
Source: For Review
Format: Paperback
Pages: 304
Buy: Amazon UK Amazon US / The Book Depo
A powerful and moving novel about bravery from the Guardian's "writer to watch" Non Pratt, perfect for fans of Rainbow Rowell, John Green and Holly Bourne.

How far is too far when it comes to the people you love?

Claire Casey hates being the centre of attention. But if it means getting Sef Malik to notice her, it’s a risk she’s happy to take.

Sef is prepared to do anything to help his recently disabled brother. But this means putting Claire’s love – and life – on the line. Because when you're willing to risk everything, what is there left to lose?

The Review: Truth or Dare by Non Pratt is a book that I was really excited to read. After reading and loving her debut novel Trouble, I was more than excited to see what this author could do next.

This story is about two teenagers, Claire and Sef, who are both going through some serious life issues mainly bulling and disabilities. The story tells the characters journey of trying to raise money for Sef’s brother who has been hurt and trying to afford the cost of his treatment. This brings Claire and Sef to create Truth or Dare, where they record themselves online doing crazy dares to raise money. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story because it was not something I’d read before and trying to bring awareness to an illness to a great achievement so bravo to the characters for doing something selfless and brave.

The story is also told from both main characters narratives, so different points of view and for a story like this I definitely think it was needed. It made the story that much more real and enjoyable to get the feeling from both characters. And I loved how you have to flip the book to get the other characters story. Very unique!

I have to say I really did want something more from the end. I’m not a big fan of open endings – I like closure so I can move on from a story but this felt much unfinished to me.

In all, Truth or Dare is an enjoyable read. I didn’t quite like it as much as Trouble but I’m excited to read more from Non Pratt.

Thank you to Walker for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

{Review} Avenged (Ruined #2) by Amy Tintera

Release Date: May 2nd, 2017
Finished Date: July 12th, 2017
Publishers: HarperTeen
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Source: For Review
Format: Hardback
Pages: 416
Buy: Amazon UK Amazon US / The Book Depo
A war that will fuel her. A bond that will destroy her.

Emelina Flores has come home to Ruina. After rescuing her sister, Olivia, from imprisonment in rival kingdom Lera, Em and Olivia together vow to rebuild Ruina to its former glory.

But just because Em and Olivia are out of Lera doesn’t mean they are safe. Their actions over the past year have had consequences, and they are now targets of retaliation. Olivia will destroy everyone who acts against Ruina. Em isn’t as sure.

Ever since Em posed as Prince Casimir’s betrothed in Lera, she’s started to see another side to this war. Lera may have destroyed the Ruined for decades, but Em knows that Cas is different. And now that he’s taken the throne, Em believes a truce is within reach. But Olivia suspects that Em’s romantic feelings for Cas are just coloring her judgement.

Em is determined to bring peace to her home. But when winning the war could mean betraying her family, she faces an impossible choice between loyalty and love. Em must stay one step ahead of her enemies—and her blood—before she’s the next victim in this battle for sovereignty.

The Review:
You all know that YA fantasy has fast become my favourite genre and I’m always on the lookout for new series to try, so when I read Ruined by Amy Tintera last year I was instantly sold. With the release of Avenged - the sequel to Ruined, this series is now becoming a favourite because I enjoyed Ruined a lot but I enjoyed Avenged even more.

Emelina Flores has done the impossible. She has infiltrated her enemy’s world to rescue her sister from capture. Now finally free, Em and Olivia gather up the remaining Ruina people and try to rebuild their lives. However, with Olivia hell bent on revenge and with the Lera forces breathing down their necks, Em and Olivia aren’t safe yet. And so Em turns to the one person she never thought she could count on – Casimir, the Lera Prince for help while also trying to battle her feelings for him. While a war is brewing from all sides, Em must decide the right choice for her people while trying to stay true to herself in the process.

I absolutely loved this book! I was actually quite surprised because you know sequels tend to have that problem of being boring or suffering from middle book syndrome but not Avenged. Avenged was action packed from the start with the story becoming stronger and stronger with each page and the story was very unpredictable. It really was hard to work out what was going to happen next. It also has great chemistry between the characters and the romance - just enough to keep you on your toes!

I really enjoyed reading Emelina and Cas’s point of views in the first book but one of the main reasons I enjoyed Avenged more was because we also saw more from Aren and Olivia. As a reader it was great getting to know them more – okay, maybe not so much of Olivia as I really don’t like her but, it was still interesting to read more about her.

I honestly cannot wait to read the next instalment when it releases. I already know how I’d like the series to end but I honestly don’t know if that will or can happen. Either way, I’m eager to find out!

Thank you to Harper 360 for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

{Review} Fierce Obsessions (The Phoenix Pack #6) by Suzanne Wright

33283628Posted by Donna
Release Date: June 13th, 2017
Finished Date: June 11th, 2017
Publishers: Montlake Romance
Genre: Adult, Paranorml, Romance

Format: eARC
Pages: 306
Buy: Amazon UK Amazon US / The Book Depo
When raven shifter Riley Porter was given sanctuary by the Phoenix Pack, she let them believe she had left her flock. Reluctant to divulge the secrets of her past, she was still embraced as family. Only Tao Lukas, the protective and passionate Head Enforcer of the pack, was resistant to the enigmatic shifter. Until Riley started to arouse in him something other than suspicion.

Tao doesn’t trust lone shifters, especially ones so guarded—and tempting. But the sexual tension between them is making them both come undone, and vulnerable to more than desire. All Tao wants is for Riley to stay with him and to trust him with the truth of her past.

As Riley’s mysteries come to light, so does a danger that threatens not only her life but the safety of the entire pack. For Tao, keeping Riley safe means keeping her close—forever—as his mate.

The Review: I hate to say this but is it me or is this series starting to feel a bit repetitive? Gaah! I adore this series and the authors work but with the release of the last few books I’m starting to find more and more faults with them and I honestly don’t want to. I want to love them all but for me Fierce Obsessions was my least favourite book from the series.

This story started WAY too quickly. There was no suspense, no build up, it was just WHAM and the story had already started before I even knew it. I guess I felt a little cheated. Tao has been always been a favourite character of mine so I was majorly excited when he was getting his own story but something about his and Riley’s story just didn’t click. I’m not sure if the author gave us any hints that the story would involve Tao or Riley (maybe I forgot if she did, I don’t know) but I was a little surprised that Riley was Tao’s love interest. And that’s not because she’s a raven shifter which was pretty cool to read about but, because I never felt any hint or spark between the two characters during previous books. It’s like the story starts and Tao is already so in love with Riley that he’ll do anything for her – it was all just so quick.

I also wasn’t a fan that most (I say most, I mean half) of the book taking placed away from the Phoenix territory. Tao and Riley leave pretty early on to go visit her Raven pack and I wouldn’t have minded but it was so early on that I wasn’t invested in Riley that much as a character to care what happened before she became a lone Raven. I wanted to get to know Riley more before having to get to know all the people from her life before and also I wanted more time to explore Tao and Riley’s relationship before being whisked away from my favourite pack, so yes, I felt it took me away from the story a little.

And Greta – I used to find her funny now she just grates on my nerves. Please do something about her!

The rest of the story was pretty enjoyable to read and I loved being back with my favourite characters. I understand with a series this big that I won’t enjoy every book but I feel like the last few have been a little rushed and I’m hoping the author will slow down a little. I will continue to support the author and this series because I do love them, it’s just a shame I couldn’t enjoy this one more.

Thank you to Montlake Romance for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

{Review} The Secret History of Us by Jessi Kirby

Posted by Donna
Release Date: August 1st, 2017
Finished Date: May 20th, 2017
Publishers: Harper360
Genre: YA, Contemporary, Romance
Source: For Review
Format: Paperback
Pages: 288
Buy: Amazon UK Amazon US / The Book Depo
Gorgeously written and emotionally charged, The Secret History of Us explores the difficult journey of a teenage girl who must piece her life together after losing her memory in a near-fatal accident.

When Olivia awakes in a hospital bed following a car accident that almost took her life, she can’t remember the details about how she got there. She figures the fog is just a symptom of being in a week-long coma, but as time goes on, she realizes she’s lost more than just the last several days of her life—she’s lost her memory of the last four years. Gone is any recollection of starting or graduating high school; the prom; or her steady boyfriend Matt. Trying to figure out who she is feels impossible when everyone keeps telling her who she was.

As Liv tries to block out what her family and friends say about who she used to be, the one person she hasn’t heard enough from is Walker, the guy who saved her the night her car was knocked off that bridge into the bay below. Walker is the hardened boy who’s been keeping his distance—and the only person Olivia inexplicably feels herself with. With her feelings growing for Walker, tensions rising with Matt, and secrets she can’t help but feel are being kept from her, Olivia must find her place in a life she doesn’t remember living.

The Review: I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t know that Jessi Kirby had a new book coming out until the lovely people at Harper360 emailed me and so of course I jumped at the chance to read The Secret History of Us.

The Secret History of Us is a moving story about a young girl recovering after being in a car accident and dealing with the aftermath of losing her memories from the last four years and finding out who she really is.

I’ve read several stories before with characters that suffer from memory loss and while the story isn’t something new to me, I find I enjoy stories like this because I like to see how the author delivers the story they wish to tell. In this case, I found The Secret History of Us very enjoyable. I loved how the author handles the struggles the character faces and it was definitely eye opening to read about a character that loses so many years of her memories and to see how she deals with it.  The fact that she has to basically rediscover who she is felt very realistic. She was around family that would tell her what she did before and I understand the reasons why Olivia tried to be that person again but I liked it even more when she went with her own gut feelings and did the things people wouldn’t expect her to do.

I really liked all the characters, Olivia of course being my favourite. I did like all the secondary characters as well especially Walker however I do wish he had some more time in the spotlight. He’s introduced early on in the story but we don’t really start to get to know him until closer to the end. I guess I would have liked more.

In all, The Secret History of Us is a great contemporary read that tackles real life issues and gives you a taste of what it could be like for you if you were in Olivia’s situation. It’s also the perfect read for summer so if you haven’t added it to your TBR then I’d highly recommend it.

Thank you to Harper360 for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

{Review} P.S I Still Love You (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) by Jenny Han

Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter.
She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever.
When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

In this charming and heartfelt sequel to the New York Times bestseller To All the Boys I've Loved Before, we see first love through the eyes of the unforgettable Lara Jean.

Love is never easy, but maybe that’s part of what makes it so amazing.

The Review: PS I Still Love You is the second book in Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series and if you honestly haven’t read this series then I highly recommend adding it to your to-be-read pile because it’s amazing!

This is the second time I’ve read PS I Still Love You and it was just as good as the first time. With the release of the third book I wanted to refresh myself with the series and I’m really glad I did because there was so much information that I completely forgot. Not only that but it was great to familiarise myself with these fantastic characters once again.

After the events in To All Boys I’ve Loved Before you go into the book with hopes that Lara Jean and Peter are together and happy and while that might be true, there is one certain girl that is willing to disrupt the happiness that the loveable couple have found together. So while I was expecting some fluffy romance, I got a heart-breaking story that really pulled on my emotions and it was still fantastic to read because Han has a way of pulling you into the characters story and not letting you leave until you’ve finished it.

Now I knew from the synopsis that another one of Lara Jean’s boys would also play a role in this story and that was John Ambrose Maclaren. While Lara Jean and Peter are going through their relationship problems, John was really there for her. John is a great character. One that anyone could easily fall for. However my problem was he just wasn’t Peter. If John had come first then maybe things could have been different but for me, I am firmly and will always be a Peter fan.

I really did enjoy this book. It has a good mixture of happy, sad, funny and emotional times and the story develops enough for you to want to read more. I can’t wait to dive into the third and final book!
